Holy Week

Eight days that changed everything — from the anointing at Bethany to the road to Emmaus, walked place by place around Jerusalem.

  1. The anointing at Bethany

    Bethany 1 · Jhn 12:1–8

Six days before Passover, in the house of Lazarus whom he raised, Mary pours a pound of costly perfume on Jesus' feet — anointing him, he says, for his burial.

  2. The King arrives

Mount of Olives · Luk 19:29–40

Down the slope of the Mount of Olives Jesus rides a colt into the city, while the crowd spreads cloaks and branches and shouts: "Blessed is the King that cometh in the name of the Lord!"

  3. The house of prayer

    Jerusalem · Mat 21:12–17

Jesus drives the money-changers out of the temple and overturns their tables: "My house shall be called the house of prayer." The blind and the lame come to him there, and children sing Hosanna.

  4. The last supper

    Jerusalem · Luk 22:14–23

In a borrowed upper room in the city, Jesus takes bread and wine and gives the Passover its new meaning: "This is my body… this cup is the new testament in my blood."

  5. The garden

    Gethsemane · Mat 26:36–46

In an olive grove across the Kidron valley, Jesus prays in agony while his friends sleep: "Not as I will, but as thou wilt." Then the torches arrive.

  6. The cross

    Golgotha · Jhn 19:16–30

Outside the city wall, at the place of a skull, Jesus is crucified between two others. Then he cries, "It is finished" — and it is.

  7. Resurrection morning

    Jerusalem · Jhn 20:1–18

Before dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene finds the stone rolled away. A man she takes for the gardener says her name — and everything changes.

  8. The road to Emmaus

    Emmaus · Luk 24:13–35

Two heartbroken disciples walk seven miles home while a stranger opens the Scriptures to them. At the table he breaks the bread — and their eyes are opened.
