Jesus before Pilate

Noah Webster Bible

Mat 27:11–26

  1. 11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest.
  2. 12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
  3. 13 Then saith Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they testify against thee?
  4. 14 And he answered him to not a word; so that the governor marveled greatly.
  5. 15 Now at that feast, the governor was wont to release to the people a prisoner, whom they would.
  6. 16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
  7. 17 Therefore when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ?
  8. 18 (For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.)
  9. 19 When he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream, because of him.
  10. 20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
  11. 21 The governor answered and said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release to you? They said, Barabbas.
  12. 22 Pilate saith to them, What shall I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say to him, Let him be crucified.
  13. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
  14. 24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it .
  15. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
  16. 26 Then he released Barabbas to them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Mrk 15:1–15

  1. 1 And forthwith in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
  2. 2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering, said to him, Thou sayest it .
  3. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
  4. 4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they testify against thee.
  5. 5 But Jesus yet answered nothing: so that Pilate marveled.
  6. 6 Now at that feast he released to them one prisoner, whom they desired.
  7. 7 And there was one named Barabbas, who lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
  8. 8 And the multitude crying aloud, began to desire him to do as he had ever done to them.
  9. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release to you the King of the Jews?
  10. 10 (For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.)
  11. 11 But the chief priests moved the people that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
  12. 12 And Pilate answered, and said again to them, What will ye then that I shall do to him whom ye call the King of the Jews?
  13. 13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.
  14. 14 Then Pilate said to them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
  15. 15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas to them, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Luk 23:1–25

  1. 1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him to Pilate.
  2. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this man perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar, saying, that he himself is Christ a king.
  3. 3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it .
  4. 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests, and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
  5. 5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.
  6. 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
  7. 7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time.
  8. 8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he had been for a long time, desirous to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some miracle done by him.
  9. 9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
  10. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
  11. 11 And Herod with his troops set him at naught, and mocked him , and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
  12. 12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together; for before they were at enmity between themselves.
  13. 13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people,
  14. 14 Said to them, Ye have brought this man to me, as one that perverteth the people: and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man, touching those things of which ye accuse him;
  15. 15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and lo, nothing worthy of death is done to him:
  16. 16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him .
  17. 17 (For of necessity he must release one to them at the feast.)
  18. 18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man , and release to us Barabbas:
  19. 19 (Who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
  20. 20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them.
  21. 21 But they cried, saying, Crucify, crucify him.
  22. 22 And he said to them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him; I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.
  23. 23 And they were urgent with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified: and the voices of them, and of the chief priests prevailed.
  24. 24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
  25. 25 And he released to them him that for sedition and murder had been cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Jhn 18:28–40

  1. 28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment-hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
  2. 29 Pilate then went out to them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
  3. 30 They answered and said to him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.
  4. 31 Then said Pilate to them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
  5. 32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
  6. 33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment-hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
  7. 34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing from thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?
  8. 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee to me: What hast thou done?
  9. 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
  10. 37 Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou a King then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a King. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
  11. 38 Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find in him no fault.
  12. 39 But ye have a custom that I should release to you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release to you the King of the Jews?
  13. 40 Then they all cried again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
