Jesus before Pilate

Darby Translation (DBY)

Mat 27:11–26

  1. 11 But Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest.
  2. 12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing.
  3. 13 Then says Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
  4. 14 And he answered him not so much as one word, so that the governor wondered exceedingly.
  5. 15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whom they would.
  6. 16 And they had then a notable prisoner, named Barabbas.
  7. 17 They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?
  8. 18 For he knew that they had delivered him up through envy.
  9. 19 But, as he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered to-day many things in a dream because of him.
  10. 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should beg for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
  11. 21 And the governor answering said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas.
  12. 22 Pilate says to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.
  13. 23 And the governor said, What evil then has he done? But they cried more than ever, saying, Let him be crucified.
  14. 24 And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but that rather a tumult was arising, having taken water, washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am guiltless of the blood of this righteous one: see ye to it.
  15. 25 And all the people answering said, His blood be on us and on our children.
  16. 26 Then he released to them Barabbas; but Jesus, having scourged him, he delivered up that he might be crucified.

Mrk 15:1–15

  1. 1 And immediately in the morning the chief priests, having taken counsel with the elders and scribes and the whole sanhedrim, bound Jesus and carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate.
  2. 2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered and said to him, Thou sayest.
  3. 3 And the chief priests accused him urgently.
  4. 4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? See of how many things they bear witness against thee.
  5. 5 But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marvelled.
  6. 6 But at the feast he released to them one prisoner, whomsoever they begged of him.
  7. 7 Now there was the person named Barabbas bound with those who had made insurrection with him, and that had committed murder in the insurrection.
  8. 8 And the crowd crying out began to beg that he would do to them as he had always done.
  9. 9 But Pilate answered them saying, Will ye that I release to you the King of the Jews?
  10. 10 for he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up through envy.
  11. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd that he might rather release Barabbas to them.
  12. 12 And Pilate answering said to them again, What will ye then that I do to him whom ye call King of the Jews?
  13. 13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.
  14. 14 And Pilate said to them, What evil then has he done? But they cried out the more urgently, Crucify him.
  15. 15 And Pilate, desirous of contenting the crowd, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, that he might be crucified.

Luk 23:1–25

  1. 1 And the whole multitude of them, rising up, led him to Pilate.
  2. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king.
  3. 3 And Pilate demanded of him saying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And he answering him said, Thou sayest.
  4. 4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find no guilt in this man.
  5. 5 But they insisted, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee even on to here.
  6. 6 But Pilate, having heard Galilee named, demanded if the man were a Galilaean;
  7. 7 and having learned that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, remitted him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem in those days.
  8. 8 And when Herod saw Jesus he greatly rejoiced, for he had been a long while desirous of seeing him, because of hearing many things concerning him, and he hoped to see some sign done by him;
  9. 9 and he questioned him in many words, but he answered him nothing.
  10. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood and accused him violently.
  11. 11 And Herod with his troops having set him at nought and mocked him, having put a splendid robe upon him, sent him back to Pilate.
  12. 12 And Pilate and Herod became friends with one another the same day, for they had been at enmity before between themselves.
  13. 13 And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
  14. 14 said to them, Ye have brought to me this man as turning away the people to rebellion, and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found nothing criminal in this man as to the things of which ye accuse him;
  15. 15 nor Herod either, for I remitted you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done by him.
  16. 16 Having chastised him therefore, I will release him.
  17. 17 (Now he was obliged to release one for them at the feast.)
  18. 18 But they cried out in a mass saying, Away with this man and release Barabbas to us;
  19. 19 who was one who, for a certain tumult which had taken place in the city, and for murder, had been cast into prison.
  20. 20 Pilate therefore, desirous to release Jesus, again addressed them.
  21. 21 But they cried out in reply saying, Crucify, crucify him.
  22. 22 And he said the third time to them, What evil then has this man done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will chastise him therefore and release him.
  23. 23 But they were urgent with loud voices, begging that he might be crucified. And their voices and those of the chief priests prevailed.
  24. 24 And Pilate adjudged that what they begged should take place.
  25. 25 And he released him who, for tumult and murder, had been cast into prison, whom they begged for, and Jesus he delivered up to their will.

Jhn 18:28–40

  1. 28 They lead therefore Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium; and it was early morn. And they entered not into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but eat the passover.
  2. 29 Pilate therefore went out to them and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man?
  3. 30 They answered and said to him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up to thee.
  4. 31 Pilate therefore said to them, Take him, ye, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not permitted to us to put any one to death;
  5. 32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
  6. 33 Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews?
  7. 34 Jesus answered him, Dost thou say this of thyself, or have others said it to thee concerning me?
  8. 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?
  9. 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants had fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.
  10. 37 Pilate therefore said to him, Thou art then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest it, that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.
  11. 38 Pilate says to him, What is truth? And having said this he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, I find no fault whatever in him.
  12. 39 But ye have a custom that I release some one to you at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews?
  13. 40 They cried therefore again all, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
