The Question about Fasting

Unlocked Literal Bible (ULB)

Mat 9:14–17

  1. 14 Then the disciples of John came to him and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees often fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
  2. 15 Jesus said to them, “Can wedding attendants be sorrowful while the bridegroom is still with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
  3. 16 No man puts a piece of new cloth on an old garment, for the patch will tear away from the garment, and a worse tear will be made.
  4. 17 Neither do people put new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will be spilled, and the wineskins will be destroyed. Instead, they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both will be preserved.”

Mrk 2:18–22

  1. 18 Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and said to him, “Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
  2. 19 Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding attendants fast while the bridegroom is still with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
  3. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and in those days, they will fast.
  4. 21 No man sews a piece of new cloth on an old garment, otherwise the patch will tear away from it, the new from the old, and there will be a worse tear.
  5. 22 No man puts new wine into old wineskins, otherwise the wine will burst the skins and both the wine and the wineskins will be lost. Instead, put new wine into fresh wineskins.”

Luk 5:33–39

  1. 33 They said to him, “The disciples of John often fast and pray, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same. But your disciples eat and drink.”
  2. 34 Jesus said to them, “Can anyone make the wedding attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is still with them?
  3. 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then in those days they will fast.”
  4. 36 Then Jesus also spoke a parable to them. “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to mend an old garment. If he did that, he would tear the new garment, and the piece of cloth from the new garment would not fit with the cloth of the old garment.
  5. 37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does that, the new wine would burst the skins, and the wine would be spilled, and the wineskins would be destroyed.
  6. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
  7. 39 No one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, 'The old is better.'”
