Jesus before Pilate

Free Bible Version (FBV)

Mat 27:11–26

  1. 11 Jesus was brought before Pilate the governor who asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” “You said it,” Jesus replied.
  2. 12 But when the chief priests and elders brought charges against him, Jesus did not answer.
  3. 13 “Don't you hear how many charges they're bringing against you?” Pilate asked him.
  4. 14 But Jesus didn't say anything, not a single word. This greatly surprised the governor.
  5. 15 Now it was the custom of the governor to release to the crowd during the festival whichever prisoner they wanted.
  6. 16 At that time a notorious prisoner was being held, a man named Barabbas.
  7. 17 So Pilate asked the crowds that had gathered, “Who do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus, called the Messiah?”
  8. 18 (He had realized it was because of jealousy that they had handed Jesus over to him to be tried.)
  9. 19 While he was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent a message to him that said, “Don't do anything to this innocent man, for I've suffered terribly today as a result of a dream about him.”
  10. 20 But the chief priests and the elders convinced the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to have Jesus put to death.
  11. 21 When the governor asked them, “So which of the two do you want me to release to you?” they answered, “Barabbas.”
  12. 22 “Then what shall I do with Jesus, the Messiah?” he asked them. They all shouted out, “Have him crucified!”
  13. 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” Pilate asked. But they shouted even louder, “Crucify him!”
  14. 24 When Pilate saw it was a lost cause, and that a riot was developing, he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I'm innocent of this man's blood. It's on your heads!” he told them.
  15. 25 All the people answered, “May his blood be on us, and on our children!”
  16. 26 Then he released Barabbas to them, but he had Jesus whipped and sent to be crucified.

Mrk 15:1–15

  1. 1 Early the next morning, the chief priest, elders, and religious teachers—the whole governing council—came to a decision. They had Jesus bound and sent him to be handed over to Pilate.
  2. 2 Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” “You said it,” Jesus replied.
  3. 3 The chief priests kept on making many accusations against him.
  4. 4 Pilate questioned him again, “Aren't you going to answer? See how many charges they're bringing against you!”
  5. 5 But Jesus didn't give any more answers, much to Pilate's surprise.
  6. 6 Now it was Pilate's custom at the Passover feast to release a prisoner to the people, whoever they requested.
  7. 7 One of the prisoners was a man called Barabbas who belonged to a group of rebels who had committed murder during an uprising.
  8. 8 The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner following his usual custom.
  9. 9 “Do you want me to release to you the King of Jews?” he asked them,
  10. 10 for he realized that it was because of their jealousy of Jesus that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
  11. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
  12. 12 “Then what should I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?” he asked them.
  13. 13 “Crucify him!” they shouted back.
  14. 14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they shouted back even louder.
  15. 15 Wanting to please the mob, Pilate released Barabbas to them. First he had Jesus flogged and then handed him over to be crucified.

Luk 23:1–25

  1. 1 The whole council rose and took him to Pilate.
  2. 2 There they started to accuse him. “We found this man deceiving our nation, telling people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming he is Messiah, a king,” they said.
  3. 3 “Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked him. “So you say,” replied Jesus.
  4. 4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I don't find this man guilty of any crime.”
  5. 5 But they insisted, saying, “He is inciting rebellion all over Judea with his teachings, from Galilee to right here in Jerusalem.”
  6. 6 When he heard this, Pilate asked, “Is this man a Galilean?”
  7. 7 When he discovered that Jesus came under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
  8. 8 Herod was very pleased to see Jesus since he had wanted to meet him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus and was hoping to see him perform a miracle.
  9. 9 He asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer him at all.
  10. 10 The chief priests and religious teachers stood there, angrily accusing him.
  11. 11 Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Then they placed a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
  12. 12 From that day on Herod and Pilate were friends—before that they had been enemies.
  13. 13 Pilate called together the chief priests, rulers, and the people,
  14. 14 and told them, “You brought this man before me, accusing him of inciting the people to rebellion. I've carefully examined him in your presence, and do not find him guilty of the charges you have brought against him.
  15. 15 Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. He has done nothing that demands he should be put to death.
  16. 16 So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
  17. 17 But they all shouted together, “Kill this man, and release Barabbas to us.”
  18. 18 (Barabbas had been put in prison for taking part in a rebellion in the city, and for murder.)
  19. 19 Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so spoke to them again.
  20. 20 But they kept on shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
  21. 21 Pilate asked them for the third time, “But why? What crime has he committed? I don't find any reason for executing him. So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
  22. 22 But they continued insisting with loud shouts, demanding that he be crucified. Their shouting succeeded,
  23. 23 and Pilate gave the sentence they demanded.
  24. 24 He released the man imprisoned for rebellion and murder, but he sent Jesus to be put to death in accordance with their demands.
  25. 25 As the soldiers led him away, they seized a man called Simon of Cyrene, who had come in from the countryside. They put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

Jhn 18:28–40

  1. 28 Early in the morning they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. The Jewish leaders didn't enter the palace because if they did they would be ceremonially defiled, and they wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal.
  2. 29 So Pilate came out to meet them. “What charge are you bringing against this man?” he asked.
  3. 30 “If he wasn't a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you,” they answered.
  4. 31 “Then you take him and judge him according to your law,” Pilate told them. “We're not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews answered.
  5. 32 This fulfilled what Jesus had said about how he would die.
  6. 33 Pilate went back into the governor's palace. He summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
  7. 34 “Did you think of this question yourself, or did others talk to you about me?” Jesus responded.
  8. 35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate countered. “It was your own people and high priests who handed you over to me. What is it that you've done?”
  9. 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it was of this world, my subjects would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from here.”
  10. 37 Then Pilate asked, “So you are a king, then?” “You say that I'm a king,” Jesus replied. “The reason why I was born and I came to the world was to give evidence for the truth. All those who accept the truth pay attention to what I say.”
  11. 38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Having said this Pilate went back out to the Jews and told them, “I find him not guilty of any crime.
  12. 39 However, it is customary for me to release a prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release the King of the Jews?”
  13. 40 “No, not him! We want Barabbas instead!” they shouted back. Barabbas was a rebel.
