งูนั้นเป็นสัตว์ที่ฉลาดกว่าบรรดาสัตว์ในท้องทุ่งซึ่งพระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าได้ทรงสร้างไว้ มันกล่าวแก่หญิงนั้นว่า “จริงหรือที่พระเจ้าตรัสว่า ‘เจ้าอย่ากินผลจากต้นไม้ทุกชนิดในสวนนี้’”
